In case Bush&Cheney launch the war against Iran, Obama will have to decide: Support it - or oppose it - or remain undecided.

If he supports the war he will lose a considerable part of his voters.

If he opposes the war he will also lose a considerable part of his voters: the "patriots" who will - as usual - fall into patriotic frenzy whenever there is a start of a new war, and see the need to support the government in war.

If he remains undecided (in what form ever) he will disappoint both sides and so lose part of his voters.

In all three cases he will lose the election to John McCain.

That is why I think it is more than a possibility that Bush&Cheney will launch this war in the weeks before the election (and find or fake a pretext that will render all "patriotic" US will be furious about Iran).

And the risks? The potentially desastrous effects (gas price etc.)? - Well, Bush&Cheney are optimists ... And if things turn badly, it will happen mainly under Obama's watch and so be his fault ...

Please e-mail congress against U.S. house resolution H.CON.RES 362 & its sister senate resolution S.RES.580. My hope is enough U.S. readers e-mail congress to not pass these bills [1]. My fear is most people won’t be aware of the bill even after it passes.

The house bill H.CON.RES 362 authorizes naval blockade of Iran (not Iraq). This is an act of war & likely to start a real war with Iran [2]. The idea is to provoke a war with Iran before Bush leaves office because an Iranian war if Obama wins is not likely. This would jeopardize the Strait of Hormuz where 40% of worlds exported oil flow through [3]. Oil prices would double or triple ($300- $400/barrel) bankrupting many businesses [4]. We recently had the worse month of June for the Dow Jones Industrials since 1930. Our economy is fragile enough now; I think we will see another great 1929 depression [5]. Since the U.S. economy is linked to Asia & the world is likely to drag most of the world’s economies down.

I believe that there will be other bad consequences from an Iranian war like Vietnam War casualty rates in Iraq & Iran forcing a draft [6]. The Middle East will become a big fireball. Worst case is the desperate military situation will bring out the Bush policy of “usable” nuclear weapons. If U. S. “usable” nuclear weapons are used the nuclear genie is not going back in the bottle until an American city is taken out in retaliation [7].

Israel’s out right refusal to halt any more settlements and come to some sort of agreement before Bush’s departure from the White House (http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSL162728920080616) would have, under the ‘normal’ circumstances prompted the USA to consider for how long they can continue to play Israel’s sugar daddy. However, the choice for the US lobby now is whether to allow Bush to ride in to the sun set with some kind of “achievement” and the, mythological fund raising power of the Israel lobby for political parties and the candidates for the Presidency.

When Condi Rice strongly criticized the Israelis today for plans to illigally build houses for non-existant settlers in East Jerusalem (74% of already built housing in conquered territories is empty and there are no more olims from abroad so it is just "creating facts" with empty buildings) they said: "Who cares what you say with only six months left in office." Now the promissed Israeli-Palestinian deal is coming apart. Israel is knowingly doing it. Bush won't attack Iran because he now realizes that the Israelis think him an idiot after they went into Lebanon in 2006 on his promise of following them with our planes into Iran. It is a sordid deal between the dumb and the blinded by avarice. But Israelis do not feel safe. That's why many Israeli officials have multiple passports. Attacking Iran will not begin to make them safe. They only will settle for the Mideast devastated by the US. Bush knows Iran is not enough. He will sit on his hands because the Pentagon will say NO WAY!

The US's slavish acceptance of Israel's demands will backfire. I believe we will go to war with Iran. And that will cause our economy to crash, our armed services to implode, and our few remaining allies to repudiate us. The public will finally wake up to the realization that being Israel's enabler is not in our best interests, and will turn against Israel with fury, despite the outsize influence of US neocons. But then it will be too late. We will really be in a holy war. If the US were a true friend of Israel, we would make it plain that we require them to abide by international law, come to a fair settlement with the Palestinians, and be a responsible global citizen. Friends do not let friends act irresponsibly.

Yes, I believe it is entirely possible Bush will strike Iran. He will of course, have a reason for doing so, that the mainstream press will simply repeat until it gains a measure of support.
Also, as to what this will do to the price of oil, that is just a bonus for the oil men in this administration, not to mention the members of congress who have so heavily invested in weapons made by the war, (not defense) contractors. At last look, I think John Kerry has already made 32 million or more by investing with the war contractors and many others in congress have done the same. Along with their new pay raises, does anyone think congress cares about the cost of anything? They have no more idea what it is like to have to adjust and do without certain things we all need, than I have any idea what it is like to never have to concern myself with the price of any essential item.
For the top dogs, war with Iran will be this years best moneymaker, so what is there to stop them? Sadly, most Americans have no idea of the forces arrayed against their interest and are so mis-informed, that they actually vote for the very people destroying what they work so hard for.
I somewhat agree with oroboros, that it will take a depression like disaster to awaken Americans, but since they have been involved for most of their lives with the propoganda of T.V. and radio reality, they have no basis of fundamental knowledge to lead them to an accurate understanding of how and who killed our republic in the first place.
These and many other reasons, lead me to believe that the traitors in Washington will go to war, as it should be apparent to everyone by now that, they will do whatever they wish and our opinion means nothing to them.

Why don't we get together and really talk??? WHY, WHY, WHY? Throughout history Iranians have proven to be a peace loving nation. When Saddam used chemical weapons against Iranian soldiers (with American provided special helicopters and coordinates) Iranians refused to reciprocate though they could. Making and using WMD is against the core belief of Iranian nation let alone their religious teachings. America, Europe and Israel know that. The reason why they continue to put pressure on Iran is because since the revolution Iran has embarked on a course that emphasizes it's independence from foreign (especially western) influences. The West cannot stand this. However, Iran knows that it cannot live in a vacuum. It cannot drink it's oil and needs the west to develope. Iran has some issues with the west and is willing to sit down with the west to resolve them. The saber rattling and war of words over the years has made this more and more difficult for both sides. It takes courageous leaders ( such as Mao & Nixon, Sadat & Begin,...) to come to together to sort out the differences and build new alliances. America and Iran can easily be the best of friends again. A war will destroy this opportunity for many years to come.

"Iran Citizen" @ 11:11am:

Yeah, right. First of all, even if you are an Iranian citizen, you don't speak for Iran's other 70 million people. Second, jf you want to overthrow your government, be my guest. Get your fellow citizens to play along and go do it. Don't expect us Americans to help you. We have no vested interest in it either way.

More likely you are Daniel Pipes or some other neocon ass-clown trying to insert some lame propaganda into the discussion. You are among the wrong crowd for that, brother.

"We Americans are too stupid to start over on our experiment with democracy."

Actually, I think a major disaster is precisely what is needed to shake us out of our stupidity. It may take a couple generations of suffering, but we'll come back around.

Look at the values that came out of the Depression. We've lost the ethics of sharing and hard work that suffering gave us.

Suffering can be good, if it brings about change that alleviates the suffering.
