I think as long as Israel has nuclear weapons aimed at Iran the Iranians will want a deterrent or two. They’d be fools if they didn’t. But they are winning the propaganda war right now. They will bide their time.

Has anyone speculated that perhaps the Iranians stopped work on the bomb because the one person they were really worried about, the one person who claimed to have WMD pointed their way at the time was thrown out- Saddam Hussein?

Perhaps they stopped because nuclear weapons no longer have any practical value for them, as there is noone left who has actually invaded them recently. Iran may judge that Israel is less of a threat to them if they do not have nuclear weapons than if they do.

Their nuclear program may have been entirely Iraq-centric, and when the US eliminated Saddam, they eliminated the need for the program.

The NIE report was a repudiation of the Neocons–and by proxy their leading presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Ruling elites indeed do worry about the United States image as a toady to Israeli strategic interests, and the crash of the dollar as a reserve currency. That won’t be fixed if Clinton is elected.

Dear Jim,

Perceptive you are, as ever. Reading around all the reactions to the NIE statement, I can’t help but feel that for most of them, it’s not a question of “We were wrong about Iran”. It’s a question of “Well, we still have a right to go and bomb some bastard or other, but godammit, we can’t find a reason at the moment.”

I’ve always felt that Bush was a little man in big boots, pushed around by the big boys, only respected because he was the man the people elected.

With Yosemite Sam Bolton and Wolfovitz still active, and Cheney driving the truck, who can tell where America will go next for a Red under the Bed?

Don’t be fooled. Bush is selling out Israel and his own country, plain and simple. The intelligence community are the same clowns who didn’t predict the North Korea nuke test, etc. Fact: Iran is run by a crazed maniac who is bent on destroying Israel and America. Except for the thirty percent of those who are Bush dead enders, the majority of the American public can now see the the entire neo-con establishment is made up of a bunch of nuts. But, those of us who are sane already knew this when they declared that is is they who create and define reality, while the rest of us can only react to the reality they create, and while we are doing this they will create another reality to which we must react.
