Like all his predecessors, the choice before Obama now is between whether he adopts policies which will assure him a second term or which are, what he believes to be good for the American economy, the global and local environment and America’s international standing.

Irregardless of our opinions of Obama [I, for one, would have voted for Ralph Nader], he is in an unenviable situation trying to fix (in a short period of time) what took decades to be systematically destroyed. It is not an easy task. For his economic stimulus, I think one year will be the test; His foreign policy should start showing some results within six months.

I must admit I am not an optimistic considering the team he has amassed both around him and around Hillary Clinton. I really hope I'm wrong!

Well said Gordon. I guess we are a desperate nation searching for a savior and hero. Obama is a politician first and we shouldn’t forget that. I am very skeptical about him but I’ll give him the benefit of a doubt. I’ll wait and see what he does and not what he preaches.

Good cop, bad cop indeed. As if he wasn't fully informed of Biden's speech.

I was shocked by this piece. Within a few short paragraphs we find : 'I thought his extemporaneous answers to the few foreign-policy questions he was posed were pretty impressive; But I was particularly impressed by the way...;Again, if these were a prepared speech, it would have been much less impressive'.

All this school-girly hero worship from a renowned cynic over a man who has achieved nothing beyond empty rhetoric. How desperate are we for a saviour?

To quote Benjamin Franklin: "Well done is better than well said."

Why was he not asked how his Clinton retreads are the recipe for change we can believe in; why was he not asked to comment on his opinion on the slaughter in Gaza, now that he is President; what does he think about bombing villagers in Pakistan - did he give the orders and what is he trying to achieve?

Impressive indeed in being able to skirt around answering a few patsy questions that were not followed up. Why not address Israel's nuclear armory?

Pathetic.

I'm somewhat persuaded by your take on the Prez's response to Helen Thomas, which irritated me when he said it. (Why deny that Israel has a big nuke arsenal, and that Iran's quest is influenced by that?)
