For all the incredible complexity of the Middle East, from the US perspective there has been only two variables:Israel and Oil. The problem has been that to benefit our relations with one has always been damaging to the other. The Neocons believed that invading Iraq would be, at long last, good for both. It has been a disaster for both.

Lest we forget: All day long on 9/11 on every talk show Netanyahu was making the same point: Afganistan is a side show, Iraq is the heart of the beast.

That's the point, we do not like any of it... We want it all to end. No blame game. Just the pure ending of all this.

It is not religion that is the problem, even though religion is played up....

Let me get this right. First make an excuse, then Shock&Awe, then create more excuses when the last one found to be a lie. Then say you are not there to stay indefinately as Rumsfeld said, then build the biggest 'embasy' ever, on the same land that Saddam occupied, use his palaces as your base and AbuGahrib his gulag becomes your torture chambers. Iraq did not do 911.

What makes you so different?

Now you want to reap the reward of the thousands soldiers dead and the billions squandered. One mighty stuff up after another, creating 'reality' as you go on.

Question? What about the people of Middle East? Us. Me and my family. Do you actually consider what we desire?

Think about that for a minute. Just like the Palestinians who not part of the Zionist equation, we too are never part of your equation. Let me recall Zionist motto for those young ones: "Land without people for people without land." They sold that to you and to the Europeans and you keep on repeating the same mistakes.

Stop creating victims for today's victim is tomorrow's perpetrator.

And you wnder 911 came out of nowhere? Read your foreign policy in Middle East and watch what you are doing right here in my country. The chickens will come home to roost in another decade or two.

Stop the cycle of lying and violence.

Let there be peace.

The debate over the real motivation for the Bush administration and its Congressional lapdogs’ invasion of Iraq (since we now know it wasn’t what turned out to be merely the pretext for invasion--Saddam’s alleged ties to the 9/11 attacks and his alleged possession of WMD) has now moved on to new ground, as outlined in the article above. It is now clear that the motivation was the desire for US regional hegemony.

But something the article doesn’t go into is that different camps in Washington wanted US hegemony for different reasons.

The Jewish Zionist camp wanted US hegemony primarily for the benefit of Israeli “security“, expansionism and to force the acceptance racialist Zionism and its Jewish-supremacist caste-system model throughout the Mideast at US gunpoint.

The Cheneyite camp (that is, those non-Jewish Zionist Neocons who subscribe to Cheney’s neo-colonial, power and greed-driven mindset) wanted US hegemony primarily to secure US control of oil in Iraq and perhaps eventually in Iran, and to project US power throughout the region in order to back off other possible suitors for Mideast oil and territory (primarily China and Russia, and to a lesser extent the EU).

The Bushcons and Congress wanted hegemony for both reasons: Israel and Empire. (Bush isn’t the only “Christian” Zionist in Washington; there are plenty of others, including many Democrats whose “Christian” Zionism is motivated primarily by Jewish campaign contributions. Nor is he the only insanely ruthless, venal, arrogant and conscienceless tyrant; Congress is full of them.)

Long story short, the entire corrupt Washington Establishment (including the media) knew exactly why Washington was invading Iraq, and they knew it had nothing to do with the reasons professed to the American people. It had to do with OYE!: Oil, Yahweh and Empire.

The problem is, oil, Yahweh and Empire don't mix, and so it's bitten them in the ass, and will continue to do so until their cold, dead hands are pried from the levers of power.

I know many people who are being lulled by indications that the threat of war on Iran has peaked and that the "realists" have become ascendent. Lobe's article is must reading for them.

Even if you cut the head of a rattlesnake off, it can still strike and kill, and the neocons have been struck no such mortal blow. They still have the presidency, no doubt the CIA, an important segment of the corporate elite as represented by the Wall Street Journal, and a dangerous armed right-wing movement behind them; and they are still protected by the corporate media and AIPAC. That they have good reason to be deeply frightened by recent political and economic developments makes them more dangerous, not less. Thus it is essential that we pay close attention, as Jim Lobe has done, to what they are thinking and doing. And doing this it is important to try to get into their minds, see how they see the world and where they stand in it, and try to anticipate their next moves.

Let's try standing in - say - Dick Cheney or George Bush Sr.'s shoes and consider the obstacles they see to realizing their vision of an American-dominated Middle East and monopoly control of the remaining oil reserves.

They must see an American economy that is starting to founder and is losing its grip. An American populace which has turned against the war and is threatening to elect a candidate on whose support they can't rely. The sham democratic process in Iraq blowing up in their face, responding to pressure from the Iraqi people. Not enough troop strength to occupy Iran, never mind Iraq and Afghanistan. The oil-producing countries of Latin America and Central Asia slipping out of their grasp. Despite their best efforts, information is flowing like blood from an open wound out over the Internet. They need a major turnaround in public support, a win for McCain and a willingness of the public to support measures to build a much larger army, fast. And they need the power to deal with the collapsing dollar by dictating the terms of a new international agreement.

So if you were in their shoes, what would you do? Give up and bide your time, or act? And what options would you see? What would the son of Prescott Bush do?

We must join with Lobe in looking closely and critically at the evidence, including what they and their spokespeople are saying. And then we must think carefully about how we - the people - must respond. Now. Time is getting short.
