So Friedman now says “that the most important prize in the world has been devalued in this way”; was he around when Henry Kissinger was awarded it?

I agree with you, except I don't think too many people take their marching orders from the major parties. The Right (conservatives, not libertarians) looks to Fox News and people like Rush much more than to the GOP. I would tend to agree that the Left is more likely to follow the line laid down by the Congressional Democrats, but I also think left-wing academics and pundits/bloggers (not to mention Michael Moore) have more influence with Democrats on the party's far left.

Anyone wanting a primer in the military should enlist and see who's standing next to you. What makes a good soldier doesn't necessarily make a good citizen. Sadly, too many of our citizens would rather accept commands from our two towering generals GOP and DEM without question.

Of course many are disenchanted though they have yet to break out of the straitjacket that our two party system and mainstream media hold so many in. Fact is, it's hard to get good information and see what's going on.

If more people read the Lobelog we'd all be better off.

Great column. I commented here recently to the same effect, that neocons and liberal realists are quite similar in outlook. Does the word Janus perhaps come to mind? I think that Friedman, like David Brooks, writes an outstanding column about one out of ten times. The rest of his stuff is drivel. It's just amazing how mediocre the punditocracy is. But then, was it better 30, 50, or 80 years ago? I doubt it.

The military has become an institution of last resort, so to speak. Everything else in American society seems foul and corrupt. While the virtues of the American military are real, they are also exaggerated in the minds of most Americans. Of course, the military-bashers on the Left exaggerate the military's flaws to an ever greater extent. But it's troubling to think Americans might one day look to the military to solve our problems at home. Is an American junta a possibility at some point? I would have thought it more likely in the General Walker era; I don't think soldiers today want overt political power. But if America's decline (which can be said to have begun with Vietnam, or perhaps more accurately on Nov. 22, 1963) continues and accelerates, who knows?
